FAQ

Q1. What should I do in case of an emergency?

  • If you are having a medical emergency call 911 immediately.
  • If you are smelling gas please refer to Q2.
  • If you are having any other emergency relating to heating, air conditioning, ventilation, water heaters, or generators please call us at (302) 378-1203 or (410) 398-3233 for immediate assistance. We are available 24/7/365.

Q2. What should I do if I am smelling gas?

  • Immediately leave your residence.
  • Do NOT turn any lights on or off, touch any switches in the home, or any other electronic devices as these can all be sources of fire ignition.
  • Do NOT use the telephone inside your home.
  • Go to a neighbor's house or use your cellular phone once you have left the residence and immediately call the fire department to evaluate the situation and determine if the property is safe to re-enter.
  • Once the fire department makes their determination they will likely advise for your gas company to come to the property and locate where the leak is coming from. Once they determine where the leak is you can then contact our office to schedule an appointment for one of our technicians to repair the leak.

Q3. What is the average lifespan of an HVAC system?

The average lifespan of central air conditioners and heat pumps is approximately 12-15 years. Furnaces can last much longer with proper care, however, technological advancements generally warrant the need for replacement within the same time frame. It is also more cost effective to replace your entire HVAC system at the same time rather than replacing individual units on separate occassions.

Q4. How can I extend the life of my system?

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". To best maintain the integrity of your system you want to make sure that you schedule annual check-ups for both your heating and air conditioning systems; once during the spring season for your air conditioner and again in the fall season for your heater. Also, be sure to change your filter regularly every 1-3 months, on average. If someone in your home has been sick with an airborne illness (influenza, the common cold, strep throat, etc.) you may want to change your filter as soon as the illness has been treated so that the germs do not continue to cycle through the ventilation.

Q5. How often should I change my filters?

Your filter should be changed regularly every 1-3 months, on average. If someone in your home has been sick with an airborne illness (influenza, the common cold, strep throat, etc.) you may want to change your filter as soon as the illness has been treated so that the germs do not continue to cycle through the ventilation.

Q6. What if my unit is making an unfamiliar sound?

Take note of what kind of sound your unit is making. Shut the system off and call Summit Heating and Air Conditioning at (302)378-1203 or (410)398-3233. There can be a variety of reasons why your unit is making a different sound and needs to be diagnosed immediately by a professional.

Q7. What should I do if my unit is frozen?

Shut your air conditioner off as soon as you notice that it is no longer cooling or is beginning to cool less effectively and then call Summit Heating and Air Conditioning at (302)378-1203 or (410)398-3233 to schedule an appointment with a technician. The unit needs to thaw out before the problem can be diagnosed and repaired. If you do not get an appointment the same day that you noticed the unit freezing up you can let your unit thaw overnight by itself but do NOT turn it back on before the technician arrives. If your appointment is the same day it is recommended that you switch your thermostat dials from "COOL" to "OFF" and also from "AUTO" to "FAN". By following these steps your unit should thaw out quicker and allow for the technician to properly diagnose and repair the problem.

Q8. What if my heater is not running at all?

If your heater is not running there are a few things you can do before scheduling an appointment for repair.

  • Check to see that the main switch to the unit is on. If the switch is off simply turn it on and this should rectify the situation.
  • Check your breakers. If they have been flipped then you should just need to flip them back.
  • If there is snow on the ground you are going to want to check your outside vent pipe to make sure the area is clear from snow. If snow is blocking the opening of the vent pipe not only will it cause your system to not operate but can be dangerous, causing carbon monoxide to back up into your home.
If after checking all of these recommendations your unit continues to not operate call Summit Heating and Air Conditioning at (302) 378-1203 or (410) 398-3233 to schedule an appointment for a technician to come to your home and diagnose and repair the problem.

Q9. Should I cover my outside unit?

It is recommended to cover your outdoor unit during the months that it is not in use. However, you want to make sure that you only cover the very top portion of the unit to keep debris from falling into it. You want to leave the sides open to continue to allow airflow through the unit. Inhibiting airflow could cause irreparable damage to the unit.

Q10. What does SEER mean?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), simply put, is a measurement of efficiency for air conditioning systems and heat pumps. The higher the SEER is the more efficient the unit is.

Q11. What does AFUE mean?

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is a measurement of efficiency for a heating unit. The higher the AFUE rating the more efficient the unit is.

Air Conditioning

The air conditioner in your home is made up of three main components: a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator coil. The compressor is located inside of the condenser, which is the unit located outside of your home. The evaporator coil is located in the unit inside your home and is typically part of the heating system as well.

Refrigerant enters the compressor as a cool, low-pressure gas. The refrigerant is then compressed and sent out as a hot, high-pressure gas and flows into the condenser. The fan in the condensing unit comes on to help the heat dissipate quickly, and the refrigerant leaves the condenser cooler and liquefied. The liquid goes into the evaporator coil through a very narrow opening where the pressure then drops, and the liquid begins to evaporate into a gas. As it makes this change back to a gas, it separates the heat from the surrounding air and begins to blow the cool air through the ventilation throughout your home.

How often should I have maintenance performed on my air conditoner?

We recommend that your air conditioner undergo maintenance at least once a year. This will keep your unit running efficiently and possibly reduce your costs in the long run.

How often should I replace my air conditioner?

The average lifespan of a central air conditioner is approximately 12-15 years. To keep your unit running efficiently, it's important to perform regular maintenance.

What if my air conditioner is running, but it is not cooling my house?

We can send out a technician to diagnose the cause of the problem. One of the most common causes of an AC not cooling properly is a low refrigerant charge.

Heating

How does a heater work?

The heater in your home uses one of several different fuel sources: natural gas, LP gas, oil or electric. If you have a gas or oil furnace, it is made up of four major components: the burner, heat exchanger, blower and controls. The process of heating your home starts when the temperature inside drops below what the thermostat is set to. This prompts the igniter to light the burner which creates heat. The heat is pushed into the heat exchanger, heating the air around it, and then through the ducts to heat your home and continues until the desired temperature is reached.

The average lifespan of central air conditioners and heat pumps is approximately 12-15 years. Furnaces can last much longer with proper care; however, technological advancements generally warrant the need for replacement within the same time frame. Heat Pumps

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump is a single unit used for both heating and cooling. If you are using an electric heat pump to heat your home, the process is quite different than gas or oil heating. A heat pump uses a compressor to draw energy from an outside source, such as the air, the ground or ground water, and increases the temperature to a level high enough to heat the inside of your home. The fluid boils at a low temperature, absorbing the heat into an outdoor heat exchanger/condenser. The heat then travels via refrigerant to the indoor coil, where it changes from a high-pressure gas to a liquid state and releases the heat into the air and travels through the ventilation to heat your home. The high-pressure liquid then travels back to the outside condensing unit, changing back into a low-pressure gas, and the process begins again. This process is reversed to create air conditioning, similar to a standard central air conditioner.

What should I do if we have a bad ice storm or a heavy snow fall?

Carefully remove the ice or snow from the top of the unit only. Never attempt to remove anything from the sides of the unit. Your heat pump has the ability to defrost itself and should eventually thaw the sides of the unit automatically. If the unit fails to thaw itself, you should call a service technician for assistance.

How often should I have maintenance performed on my heat pump?

Since your heat pump serves the purpose of both heating and cooling, it is highly recommended to have it serviced twice a year — once before the heating season and once again before the cooling season.Since your heat pump serves the purpose of both heating and cooling, it is highly recommended to have it serviced twice a year — once before the heating season and once again before the cooling season.

Should I ever cover my heat pump, such as in the fall and winter months?

You should never cover your heat pump. Your heat pump is used year round and needs to be able to take air in through the sides and exhaust through the top of the unit. Covering the unit could cause irreparable damage.

Geothermal

How does a Geothermal system work?

A Geothermal heat pump operates in the same manner as a traditional heat pump. The difference is that a traditional heat pump uses the outside air around it as the heating and cooling source, whereas a Geothermal heat pump uses water through a series of loop systems underground. The heat transfer is done directly through the ground, which remains at a constant 55 degrees.

What are the benefits of using a Geothermal heat pump vs. a traditional heating system?

Geo Thermal heat pumps are more environmentally friendly, using the earth's most natural resource – water – for fuel. Additionally, because the water that is used for heating and cooling is already at a neutral temperature of 55 degrees, it takes less energy to get it to the desired temperature for your home, which reduces energy costs year round.

How much will a Geothermal system reduce my energy costs?

How much will a Geothermal system reduce my energy costs?

Geothermal systems can reduce energy costs by as much 72% when compared to a traditional air conditioning system.

Are there any tax incentives when installing a Geothermal heat pump system?

Delmarva Power in the state of Delaware currently offers a grant through the Green Energy Program. The grant helps to offset the cost of installation by allowing $800 per ton for the first two tons and $700 per ton for the third ton and beyond, with a maximum grant of $5000. Customers/contractors applying for the grant must fill out the initial grant application and turn it in to the Division of Energy and Climate prior to installation.

Boilers

How does a boiler work?

Boilers are fuel-fired heaters, using gas or oil as the fuel source. The process of heating with a boiler begins with a spark, a pilot or an igniter starting the combustion process. The heat produced by combustion heats the water inside the boiler to roughly 180 degrees. A small pump, called a circulator pump, circulates the water through the house and travels to either your baseboards or radiators, where the heat is released into the home. Once the heat is released into the home, the water travels back to the boiler where the process begins again.

Is it possible for the boiler to heat the water at my house?

Yes. Some boilers use a domestic coil that is immersed inside the boiler to heat the water for domestic use.

How do I know if I have a boiler?

If you have radiators, baseboard heating or convectors, you have a boiler heating system.

How often should I have my boiler serviced?

If your boiler only heats the air in your home, you should have it serviced annually. If the boiler also heats your domestic water, you should have it serviced twice a year.

Water Heaters

How does a water heater work?

Traditional water heaters come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be electric, gas or oil fired. They all work through the same process to provide your family with hot water year round. Water fills the tank of the water heater through a dip tube until it reaches capacity and heats the water to the temperature set at the thermostat. When the call for hot water comes from an area of the home, the hot water is transferred out through the heat-out pipe and is carried to that part of the house.

At what temperature should I set my water heater?

The recommended temperature for your water heater is 120 degrees. This temperature will help reduce energy costs and prevent burns, while still effectively providing hot water.

Should I turn my water heater off when I go on vacation?

Yes. It is a good idea to turn off your water heater when you leave your home for more than a couple days to reduce energy costs and prevent possible flooding. You want to make sure that you turn off the water supply to the water heater. If your unit is gas fired, make sure to turn off the burner; if it's electric, make sure you turn it off at the breaker box.

What are the benefits of using a tankless water heater instead of a traditional water heater?

A traditional water heater will continue to heat the water in the tank to keep it constant at the temperature set on the thermostat, even when not in use, so that it is ready when called for use. Using energy to heat water not in use is called standby heat loss. Tankless water heaters avoid standby heat loss by only heating water as it fills the tank and only when being called for, making it more efficient and reducing energy costs. Tankless water heaters also are smaller in size, but can be nearly double the cost of a traditional water heater to purchase and install.

Indoor Air Quality

What factors affect indoor air quality?

Indoor air quality pertains to the quality of air inside your home. Many factors can affect the air quality, such as humidity, pollen, sickness, mold and mildew, etc. There are several solutions, based on your needs, to improve the quality of the air inside your home.

Thermostats

A thermostat is a device used to read the current temperature of a space and provide the ability to modify that temperature as desired. Thermostats have come a long way since first being invented in 1883. Thermostats today can range from digital on the basic end, to thermostats with dehumidification built in for humidity control, to ones so advanced that you can control them remotely from your smartphone.

Humidifiers

A humidifier is a device used to add moisture to the air in your home. These can be extremely beneficial for several reasons, some of which you may not have known. Humidity in the air makes for more comfortable breathing in fall and winter months and helps reduce energy costs because you feel warm and comfortable at lower temperatures. Adding moisture to the air also can help protect wooden objects, such as furniture and decorative pieces, which may be sensitive to overly dry air.

Electronic Air Cleaners & Ultraviolet

According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. This is a prime reason to consider adding an electronic air cleaner (EAC) or ultraviolet light to your HVAC system. Some pollutants that can affect the air quality in your home are dust, dust mites, animal dander, pollen, smoke and viruses, which can cause a variety of health problems, such as allergies, respiratory diseases and asthma. EACs use an electrostatic attraction to trap charged particles, allowing them to settle faster so they are no longer floating through the air in your home. Likewise, ultraviolet lights damage and kill microbes commonly found in HVAC systems. They have been proven to reduce mold, fungus and viruses.

Generators

How does a generator work?

A generator is used to automatically restore the power in your home within seconds of the electricity going off due to a storm, an accident, etc. There are a variety of generators available: "Just the Essentials" covers basic items such as your refrigerator and furnace; the "Managed Whole House" covers the entire house, but offers priority to the most essential circuits; and the "Complete Whole House" generator, which covers every circuit all of the time.

How do I know which system is best for me?

If you are unsure about which generator is best for you, simply call the professionals at Summit Heating and Air Conditioning and schedule an appointment for a free estimate. One of our qualified experts will come out and evaluate the size of your home, along with your needs, and determine which option is the best fit for you.

Can I use a generator instead of my electric service?

No. It is not cost effective to run a generator in lieu of using your electricity. It is far more expensive to purchase the fuel needed to operate all circuits in your home all the time than it is to buy a small portion of electricity from the utility company.

Do generators require maintenance?

Yes. You should have your generator serviced annually to get oil and filter changes. This will ensure proper function when you need it the most!
